Dear future neighbour,

Are you planning to visit, study, or work in Canada in 2026? Whether you’re booking a flight to see family, preparing for university, or advancing your career, one of the most important steps is understanding how long your visa application might take to be processed by IRCC (Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada).

Every week, IRCC updates its processing times by country and application type and these timelines can vary widely depending on where you’re applying from and what kind of permit you’re seeking. As of January 7, 2026, many applicants around the world are seeing a range of wait times for temporary residence visas, including visitor visas, study permits, and work permits.

The processing time estimates listed below are designed to help you plan your application with confidence. They give you a realistic idea of how long IRCC may take to process visitor visas, study permits, and work permits based on your country of application. If you have fixed travel dates, school start times, or work commitments, applying as early as possible is strongly recommended. Please note that applications requiring additional review, or periods of high application volume, may result in longer processing times than those officially published by IRCC.

December 2, 2025

Dear future neighbour,

Nova Scotia has made a significant change to how it selects candidates for permanent residence. The province has moved away from evaluating each applicant as a “complete application” on a first‑come, first‑served basis. Instead, all submissions including those previously submitted are now part of a pool of candidates under a new Expression of Interest (EOI) system.

This update, announced on November 28, 2025, aims to make the selection process more aligned with labour‑market needs and economic priorities.

What exactly changed and what is the EOI system

  • As of November 28, every submission to Nova Scotia’s immigration programs whether under the Nova Scotia Nominee Program (NSNP) or the Atlantic Immigration Program (AIP) is now considered an Expression of Interest (EOI). That applies to past submissions too.

  • What this means is even if you had a “case ID” or submitted a full, eligible application before, this no longer guarantees processing or nomination. The application is now sitting in a centralized candidate pool, waiting for selection.

  • Periodically, Nova Scotia will run “draws” (like lotteries) from that pool. Only candidates selected in a draw will move forward for full processing.

  • If you are not selected, that doesn’t necessarily mean you’re rejected, your EOI just remains in the pool until the next draw.

In short submitting an application now is like raising your hand and saying “I’m interested.” It no longer guarantees that you’ll be processed; instead, you wait for a draw to see if you’re among those chosen.

Why Nova Scotia made the change

There are a few key reasons behind this shift:

  • Overwhelming interest. The number of people wanting to come to Nova Scotia drastically exceeds the number of PR nominations the province can grant — especially under its 2025 quota.

  • Federal constraints. For 2025, the combined allocation for NSNP and AIP dropped to 3,150 spots, a 50% reduction compared to 2024.

  • Greater alignment with labour‑market and economic needs. By using an EOI pool and draws, the province can prioritize candidates whose skills or jobs match current demands (for example, in sectors needing more workers).

  • Flexibility for future changes. The new system gives Nova Scotia flexibility to adapt priorities over time depending on labour demand, quota availability, and economic needs.

Who has a better shot now at what Nova Scotia is prioritizing

Under the new EOI model, selection will likely favor candidates who align with Nova Scotia’s current labour‑market and economic goals. Some of the sectors the province initially identified:

  • Healthcare

  • Construction

  • Trades

  • STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics)

  • Natural Resources

  • Manufacturing

That said, Nova Scotia cautions that priorities may evolve over time based on need.

What this means for previous applicants (and those applying now)

If you submitted a “full application” before November 28, 2025:

  • Your application has now been converted into an EOI.

  • You should not assume your application will be processed, it depends on whether it’s selected in a draw.

  • If you haven’t heard anything yet, don’t panic. It may simply mean you’re still in the pool (not rejected).

  • If you’re planning to apply now, treat it as submitting an EOI. Even if you meet all eligibility, selection is not guaranteed.

What you can do to improve your chances

While nothing can guarantee selection under an EOI system, you might increase your likelihood by:

  • Emphasizing credentials or work experience in sectors currently prioritized by the province (e.g. healthcare, manufacturing, trades, STEM).

  • Keeping your documentation ready in case you’re selected, draws may happen periodically, so being ready helps.

  • Checking Nova Scotia’s official channels regularly for updates as priorities and draw criteria may shift over time.

What to expect going forward

  • The EOI‑pool system may make processing longer for many applicants, since only a fraction of the pool will be selected each draw.

  • The approach gives Nova Scotia flexibility: as labour‑market needs shift, the province can adapt which EOIs get called.

  • For 2026 and beyond, if allocations increase (per federal plans), more draws may mean more people get selected but still likely based on demand and priorities.

  • For prospective immigrants: this change underlines that applying is no longer just about meeting eligibility but about being the right fit for Nova Scotia’s needs at the right time.

Need help with your Canadian immigration process?

If you’re in the pool (or thinking of applying), it’s worth viewing your application as a long‑term bet, not a guarantee. Prioritize building skills and credentials in in‑demand sectors, stay updated, and be ready when a draw comes.

Moving to a new country is exciting and a little bit wild. Suddenly you’re figuring out transit, banks, job searches, weather, groceries… the list goes on. Luckily, your smartphone can become a pocket-superhero for settling into Canada.

Below are 10 apps that can really help you hit the ground running.

1. Welcome to Canada

This app is a newcomer’s best friend. Available in multiple languages, it offers helpful information about housing, jobs, education, healthcare and more all in one place.
Why you’ll love it: It helps you compare Canadian cities, find services near you, and understand life in Canada without the jargon.

2. Transit

Getting from A to B is a huge deal when you’re new — buses, subways, trains, rideshares. Transit gives live public transit info for many Canadian cities.
Download this early so you’re not stuck Googling how to ride your first bus!

3. WeatherCAN

Canada’s weather can surprise you – sun in the morning, snow in the afternoon (okay maybe not always, but you get the idea). A reliable weather app is a must. While I found general references to weather apps for newcomers, this one is a top choice.
Why: You’ll know when to bring a jacket, an umbrella — or both.

4. Banking App (Examples: RBC Mobile / Scotiabank Mobile Banking)

Your first Canadian bank account will probably come soon after you land. Having a smartphone app for your bank makes managing money, transfers, and bills far easier.
Pro tip: Choose a bank with a good “Newcomer” banking package and download the app early.

5. PC Optimum

Groceries, household items — they add up. This app helps you collect points and save money at stores like Shoppers Drug Mart and Loblaws. Newcomer–friendly tip from experts.
Why: When you’re budgeting your first months, every dollar helps.

6. Job Search App (e.g., Indeed)

Finding work is often a big focus after landing. Apps like Indeed let you browse jobs, upload your résumé, set alerts.
Tip: Set alerts in your city + “open to immigrants/newcomers” keywords to catch more opportunities.

7. Food Delivery / Essentials App (Examples: SkipTheDishes / Uber Eats)

When you’re tired after moving, or your kitchen is still half-empty, these apps are lifesavers. They aren’t just indulgent — they’re practical.
Tip: Use them bonus points or deals to try local food and get comfortable in your new city.

8. Housing & Rent Search App (Examples: PadMapper / Rentals.ca)

Looking for a place to live? These apps let you browse by city, price, number of bedrooms — filters that make your life easier.
Why: Help you scout neighbourhoods, compare prices, and avoid last-minute panics.

9. Culture & Connections App: Canoo

Want to meet people, find community events, explore Canada’s culture beyond work and logistics? Canoo gives newcomers access to deals, events and even free national-park entry via its app.
Tip: Use this to start feeling at home, not just “settled”.

10. Messaging / Communication App (Example: WhatsApp)

Simple but essential. Stay connected with friends, family, local groups, newcomer communities. Used globally and in Canada.
Tip: Join newcomer groups in your city via WhatsApp or Telegram — instant community.

How to Pick The Right Ones for You

  • Think: What will help me today? Maybe it’s a map, maybe it’s a bank app.

  • Choose apps that work offline or with limited data, especially early on.

  • Set up notifications for job/housing apps – don’t miss opportunities.

  • Keep at least one app for community, culture & connection – settling is more than paperwork.

  • Make sure apps are downloaded from official stores, check reviews, ensure they support your mobile device.

These apps won’t solve everything, but they’ll give you super-powers as a newcomer. Think of your phone as a toolkit: the right apps help you navigate transit, build friendships, manage money, and feel less lost in a new country.

You’ve made the leap – now let your phone help you land. Download a few today, explore them, and gradually build the digital side of your Canadian life.

September 8, 2025

Dear future neighbour,

Canada continues to use the Express Entry system as its primary tool for selecting skilled immigrants who can help strengthen the country’s economy. The program has been evolving in 2025 with an increased focus on targeted draws, and the most recent round of invitations highlights this ongoing shift.

The Latest Draw: Focus on French-Language Candidates

On September 4, 2025, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) held Express Entry Draw #365, which was category-based and specifically targeted applicants with strong French-language proficiency.

In this round, 4,500 Invitations to Apply (ITAs) were issued, and the minimum Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score required was 446. This cut-off is relatively moderate compared to earlier draws this year, which suggests that candidates with advanced French skills continue to benefit from lower score thresholds.

See below details of September 4 Express Entry draw

Category: French Language Proficiency

Number of Invitation: 4,500

CRS Cutoff Score: 446

Tie-breaking rule: June 16, 2025

Express Entry Trends to Watch in 2025

This latest invitation round adds to an already active year for Express Entry. By mid-August 2025, the federal government had invited over 55,000 candidates across a mix of general, program-specific, and category-based draws.

A clear pattern is emerging: Canada is relying more heavily on targeted draws to meet specific labor market and demographic needs. For example, earlier in the year, healthcare professionals, STEM workers, and French-speaking applicants were frequently prioritized. Notably, the draws for French speakers have often been larger than other categories, reinforcing Canada’s goal of strengthening bilingualism and supporting Francophone communities outside Quebec.

See below summary of Express Entry draws in 2025:

Looking Ahead: New Categories for 2026

While the 2025 draws are still ongoing, attention is already turning to the future. The government has announced plans to expand Express Entry with three new categories in 2026. These will cover:

  • Senior managers in leadership roles

  • Researchers and other STEM professionals

  • Military personnel

These additions underline Canada’s intention to not only fill immediate workforce gaps but also attract top talent in areas tied to leadership, innovation, and national capacity. Public consultations on these categories are open until September 2025, meaning the final design could still evolve.

Challenges for Applicants: Accuracy Matters

Alongside these opportunities, some applicants have faced challenges. Recently, there has been a noticeable rise in refusals or procedural fairness letters where candidates declared a spouse as “non-accompanying” despite the spouse already being in Canada. IRCC has been treating such cases cautiously, viewing them as potential misrepresentation. This development highlights the importance of full transparency in Express Entry applications. Even minor inaccuracies can lead to significant setbacks.

Why These Updates Matter

For skilled workers considering immigration to Canada, the key takeaways are clear:

  1. Category-based draws offer new pathways – French speakers and professionals in priority sectors may benefit from lower CRS thresholds.

  2. Upcoming categories will broaden opportunities – High-level professionals, STEM researchers, and military applicants should watch closely for the 2026 rollout.

  3. Accuracy is non-negotiable – Ensuring that every detail in the application is truthful and consistent can mean the difference between approval and refusal.

April 15, 2025

Dear future neighbour,

On April 14, 2025, British Columbia announced substantial changes to its Provincial Nominee Program (BC PNP) that will significantly restrict new immigration opportunities in 2025. The province is narrowing its focus to target only high-impact individuals and critical labor needs, citing a reduced federal nomination allocation and a large backlog of applications.

Drastic Reduction in New Applications

For 2025, British Columbia will accept just 1,100 new BC PNP applications, a dramatic cut compared to previous years. The limited number of new applications will be reserved for front-line healthcare workers, entrepreneurs, and skilled workers who can demonstrate a high economic impact. This move reflects the province’s shift toward prioritizing quality over quantity in its selection process.

Suspension on Most Draws

The province has also placed a halt on general and priority occupation draws for the entirety of 2025. Instead, BC will select only around 100 high-impact candidates from its registration pool, which currently contains more than 10,000 individuals. This means most candidates in the pool will not receive an invitation to apply this year.

Changes to Student and Graduate Pathways

B.C. is delaying the launch of its three newly designed student immigration streams, stating that these programs will remain on hold until nomination allocation levels return to previous levels.

In the interim, the International Post-Graduate (IPG) stream will also be partially paused. Applications submitted between September 1, 2024, and January 7, 2025, will not be processed immediately but instead placed on a waitlist. Applications submitted before or after this window will still be reviewed and processed in 2025.

Targeted Stream Adjustments

The province is tightening eligibility under several existing streams:

  • The Health Authority stream will now be limited exclusively to front-line healthcare workers, whereas previously it was open to a wider range of health-related occupations.

  • Early Childhood Educator Assistants will no longer qualify under targeted education draws. Future draws in this category will now be focused solely on Early Childhood Educators.

Entrepreneur Stream Remains Active

Despite the restrictive changes across most streams, BC will continue issuing invitations under its Entrepreneur Immigration stream. This is in line with the province’s goal to attract individuals who can make a substantial economic contribution.

Inventory vs. Allocation Pressure

The decision to scale back is partially driven by operational pressure. The province began 2025 with an inventory of 5,200 applications—already exceeding the total federal nomination allocation of 4,000 for the year. Of those 4,000 nominations, BC plans to allocate 2,900 to applicants already in the system, leaving only a small number of spots available for new candidates.

January 27, 2025

Dear future neighbour,

Canada’s New Caregiver Program designed to address the increasing demand for caregivers in the country named the Home Care Worker Immigration Pilots, is set to open on March 31, 2025.

This new Home Care Worker Immigration Pilots will replace the now-terminated Home Child Care Provider Pilot and Home Support Worker Pilot, which stopped accepting applications on June 17, 2024.

Applicants must meet specific eligibility requirements which includes:

– a valid job offer from a Canadian employer or a Canadian family

– language proficiency in English or French

– a minimum Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) level of 4 which is the lowest level of English equivalent to 4 bands in writing and speaking with 4.5 in listening and 3.5 in reading for IELTS.

– at least one year of post-secondary education equivalent to Canadian standards.

New Canada Caregiver Programs: Streamlined Pathways and Improved Features

The Home Care Worker Immigration Pilots have been redesigned with several improvements to make the immigration process smoother and more accessible for caregivers. These updates aim to address previous challenges while offering more opportunities for skilled workers in the caregiving sector.

Key Highlights of the New Pilots:

Simplified Pathway to Permanent Residency:

The updated programs offer a straightforward process for caregivers to obtain permanent residency, reducing unnecessary obstacles and ensuring a quicker transition for those looking to settle in Canada.

Permanent Residency Upon Arrival:

Caregivers will now be granted permanent resident status immediately upon arrival in Canada, removing delays and uncertainties that were common under earlier pilots. This change provides caregivers with greater security and stability.

Increased Employment Flexibility:

Participants will have the option to work for employers offering temporary or part-time care services, catering to individuals who are semi-independent or recovering from illness or injury. This flexibility ensures that caregivers have a broader range of employment opportunities to choose from.

These enhancements reflect Canada’s ongoing commitment to supporting caregivers while addressing labor shortages and fostering economic growth.

Furthermore, candidates who are already in Canada and have caregiving work experience may qualify for permanent residency more quickly, provided they meet the required hours of work experience.

Previous Caregiver Programs

As the new caregiver pilots get ready to launch, it’s important to recognize the programs that laid the foundation for these developments:

1.Home Child Care Provider Pilot and Home Support Worker Pilot: These programs closed to new applications on June 17, 2024.

2.Live-in Caregiver Program (LCP): This program stopped accepting applications in 2014.

3.Caring for Children Program: This program concluded on June 18, 2019.

4.Caring for People with High Medical Needs Program: This program also ended on June 18, 2019.

5.Interim Pathway for Caregivers: A temporary pathway that closed on October 8, 2019.

These previous programs were instrumental in shaping the current landscape for caregiver immigration in Canada.

The launching of this caregiver program highlights Canada’s commitment to addressing critical labor shortages in caregiving roles, particularly as the country’s population continues to age. By offering a clear pathway to permanent residency, the programs aim to attract skilled caregivers who can contribute to the well-being of Canadian families and communities.

Canada’s Future in Global Mobility

Canada’s passport remains one of the most valuable globally, and its consistent ranking among the top 10 countries highlights its continuing influence. The country’s strong international relations, trade agreements, and its position within organizations like the Commonwealth and the United Nations contribute significantly to the ease of travel for Canadian citizens.

In the coming years, Canada’s passport may see small fluctuations in its global ranking, especially as other countries continue to negotiate for greater access to international destinations. However, its reputation for travel freedom and the opportunities it offers its citizens is unlikely to diminish.
