Dear future neighbour,

On Friday, June 21, 2024, IRCC Minister Marc Miller announced that international students can no longer apply for post-graduation work permits (PGWP) at the border. This change, effective immediately, aims to stop “flagpoling,” where temporary residents leave and re-enter Canada for quick immigration services, bypassing regular online application wait times.

The Canadian government is encouraging people to apply for permits within Canada instead of at the border. They are working to speed up processing times globally by updating their systems. This change aims to make the process fairer for everyone and reduce the practice of “flagpoling.”

A study permit expires 90 days after finishing a course, and students can apply online for a PGWP to work full-time while awaiting their permit, which they receive by mail.

Dear future neighbour,

British Columbia has permanently integrated the Entrepreneur Regional Pilot Program into its Provincial Nominee Program, now called the Entrepreneur Immigration Regional Stream, offering newcomers a new option to start businesses and settle in the province.

Entrepreneur Immigration Programs in British Columbia

Entrepreneur immigration programs in the BC PNP offer international entrepreneurs a pathway to start businesses and settle in B.C., focusing on innovation and economic growth. Initially, accepted applicants receive temporary status, transitioning to permanent residence once their business is established.

EI Regional Stream Overview and Eligibility

The EI Regional Stream targets entrepreneurs aiming to start businesses in small communities to boost regional development. Communities identify priority business types, and candidates must visit and engage with these communities early on.

Application Process for the EI Regional Stream

Entrepreneurs must secure a community referral to register and apply under the EI Regional Stream, ensuring alignment with local business priorities and facilitating their settlement and business initiation in the community.

To be eligible for the program, entrepreneurs must:

– Start a new business that matches the community’s priorities
– Show business or management experience
– Have a personal net worth over $300,000 CAD
– Invest at least $100,000 CAD in the business
– Create at least one full-time job for a Canadian citizen or PR
– Have at least CLB level 4 language proficiency
– Have or be eligible for legal status in Canada
– Be lawfully admitted to their current country of residence

Candidates that meet the criteria and have the needed business experience can contact the community using the profile page information.

Recent OINP Update:

OINP has changed its Employer Guide and Employer Job Offer stream pages to clearly state the minimum number of employees an employer needs.

The new OINP guidance clarifies that for a company with a mobile workforce, the minimum number of workers required at the location where the applicant will work or report can include both:

-workers who work at that location
-workers who report to work at that location

The “report to work” location could be:

– The place where the applicant’s direct boss or supervisor is.
– The administrative office where they get their work tasks and assignments.

The “report to work” location must have at least 5 workers in the Greater Toronto Area and 3 workers outside the GTA.

Dear future neighbour,

Are you a student, a worker, or even a visitor in Canada? Are you working towards obtaining a permanent resident status? If you answered YES to any of these questions, then this article is for YOU.

Whatever you do in any of the above categories, you must ensure that you do not make the mistake of falling out of status in Canada, which means you should be very careful to make sure that your study permit, work permit, or visitor visa does not expire; in addition, it is crucial that you do not engage in any activity that could jeopardize your status, such as failing to obey the conditions of your visa.

Many temporary residents tend to forget that their temporary status is not permanent. In this article, we want to remind you that if you fail to obey the conditions of your visa or disobey Canadian immigration law, it can result in you becoming inadmissible for permanent residence in Canada.

See below list of things that can make you inadmissible for PR in Canada:

1. Overstaying on a Visitor Visa

2. Working beyond the allowed limit on your study permit

3. Getting out of status for any reason and continuing to stay in Canada
