August 14, 2023

In the just concluded week  August 11,  International Experience Canada – IEC 2023 sent out 1,981 invitations to apply (ITAs) for work permits.

This brings it to a total of 107,045 work permit invitations sent out by Canada under the working holiday visa, young professionals and International Co-op categories since the beginning of the 2023 IEC season in January 2023.

The IEC 2023 season opened up with a set quota of accepting 90,000 newcomers from more than 30 eligible countries during this season, and additional quotas are being added as needed.

The IEC 2023 Working Holiday Visa Quota for Korea and the Republic has been increased by 2,000 to a total of 8,500.

750 new spots were added for Chile. Initially, Chile had a quota of only 400, but now a total of 1,150 Chileans will be accepted.

Although more than 100,000 people have been invited so far, around 18,000 spots are still available among all three categories.

IEC Working Holiday visa category sent out 1,818 new open work permit invitations in the just concluded week.

With 96,112 invitations already sent in 2023, this sums up to be the biggest category in IEC.  However, 17,003 spots are still available under the IEC Working Holiday visa category.

127 closed work permit invitations were sent under the Young Professionals category, while only 36 were sent under the least common category, the International Co-op (Internship).

As per latest IRCC processing update of August 9, IEC 2023 season processing time has now increased to 11 weeks.

August 10, 2023

On Wednesday August 9, 2023, IRCC updated its processing timeframes. These updates come on a weekly basis and they provide exact information that accounts for processing volumes and any changes to IRCC’s ability to handle applications.

Based on statistics from the past six months, the majority of citizenship and permanent residency services now provide processing timelines for 80% of applications which are updated weekly. Processing timeframes for temporary residence applications are also updated weekly based on statistics from the previous 8 or 16 weeks.

These processing timetables are intended to provide potential immigrants and visa applicants in Canada an idea of how long it will take to decide whether or not to accept their application.

However, this does not imply that your application will be processed in the same length of time. Given that it is based on the processing times of 80% of applicants, the processing time for your application may be longer or shorter than stated.

The Canada Border Services Agency is hiring now for 477 Student border services officers (SBSOs) for various locations across Canada, this process began on Tuesday August 8, 2023.

Student Border Services Officers (SBSOs) collaborate with BSOs in exciting, dynamic, and stimulating situations to help protect and flourish Canada.

The last date to apply is October 12, 2023, but CBSA advises interested candidates to apply early owing to the lengthy recruiting procedure. International students are eligible to apply for government student jobs, but preference is given to Canadian permanent residents or citizens.

Full-time jobs are available from late April through early September 2024. Work hours vary by location.

Part-time work may be feasible in autumn 2024 and winter 2025. SBSOs earn $16.84 to $34.59 per hour, depending on their education level.

The best thing is that SBSOs receive classroom and online instruction, as well as guidance and mentoring on the job.

See below location of Jobs for Students

SBSOs operate in Canadian cities at international airports, postal processing facilities, cruise ship operations, and telephone reporting centres.

However, they have no duty guns.

  • Alberta: Calgary (Calgary International Airport), Edmonton (Edmonton International Airport)
  • British Columbia: Richmond (Vancouver International Airport, CBSA Mail Processing Centre), Vancouver (Canada Place Cruise Ship Terminal)
  • Manitoba: Winnipeg (James Armstrong Richardson International Airport)
  • Newfoundland and Labrador: St. John’s (St. John’s International Airport)
  • Nova Scotia: Halifax (Stanfield International Airport)
  • Ontario: Hamilton (Hamilton International Airport and Hamilton Telephone Reporting Centre), London (London International Airport), Mississauga (International Mail Processing Centre), Ottawa (Macdonald-Cartier International Airport), Toronto (Pearson International Airport and Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport)
  • Quebec: Dorval (Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport), Montréal Island (International Mail Processing Centre Léo Blanchette), Québec City (Jean Lesage International Airport)
  • Saskatchewan: Regina (Regina International Airport), Saskatoon (John G. Diefenbaker International Airport)

Eligibility Requirements

For an SBSO post, you must be a full-time student at a recognized post-secondary school.

Also, you should be returning to full-time study in September 2024 and be of majority age in the workplace province.

International students currently in Canada meeting the general eligibility requirement are eligible to apply, and this has been officially confirmed. However, preference will be given to students studying criminology, law, safety/security studies, psychology, sociology, customs and border services, or police studies, as well as Canadian citizens and permanent residents who satisfy job criteria.

Note that only if your application is randomly selected for consideration will you be contacted. If by December 2023 you do not hear from CBSA, your application will not be considered for 2024 positions

In a new update, Canada announced a new pilot program under the Temporary Foreign Worker Program to address the ongoing labour shortage in the country on Tuesday August, 8, 2023.

Canada launches a new Recognized Employer Pilot (REP) that will expedite access to labour for eligible Canadian employers while maintaining the highest standards for worker protections.

This will be a 3-year pilot program commencing next month, in September 2023, that will make it easy for employers to get an LMIA.

The announcement was made by by Randy Boissonnault, the Minister of Employment, Workforce Development and Official Languages in Delta, British Columbia.

What is the new Recognized Employer Pilot program?

The Recognized Employer Pilot (REP) will reduce administrative burdens and streamline the recruiting process for Temporary Foreign Worker (TFW) Program employers with a history of meeting program requirements.

Before submitting a work permit application to engage a temporary foreign worker, the majority of employers must first submit a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA).

An LMIA confirms the need for a transient foreign worker and that no Canadians or permanent residents are available to fill the position.

In addition, it ensures that the employment offer is genuine and that the employer has complied with Program requirements to safeguard employees.

To participate in REP, employers must have received at least three positive LMIAs for the same occupation within the past five years from a list of occupations designated as in-shortage and supported by Canadian Occupational Projection System (COPS) data.

Recognized employers will have access to LMIA validity periods of up to 36 months and, if necessary, simplified LMIA applications for future hiring of additional employees.

REP will be implemented in two phases:

  • Employers in the Primary Agriculture stream will be able to submit applications for the 2024 season beginning in September 2023.
  • Phase two commences in January 2024 and allows all other industries to participate.

The application period for both streams will end in September 2024.

Employers who are anticipated to meet REP eligibility requirements will be invited proactively to register using a dual-purpose LMIA application that differs from the standard LMIA.

Employers may request that the application be used to simultaneously submit for recognized status under REP and the LMIA.

Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC) will determine eligibility for the REP based on the employer’s past participation in the TFW Program.

If an employer is not granted recognized status, they will still be eligible to utilize the TFW Program, and the Department will continue to evaluate their LMIA.

There are two methods to submit an LMIA and REP application:

  1. Through the LMIA Online Portal, a dependable and secure platform where employers can complete and submit an online application to ESDC; or,
  2. if the employer has a legitimate exemption evidence to the LMIA Online Portal, they can email a PDF application form to ESDC.

The evaluation of a REP application will be based on the employer’s compliance history with the TFW Program and the frequency with which they use the Program to fill in-demand positions.

Employers who qualify can expect:

  • a simplified application process for future LMIA applications for positions on the COPS list;
  • fewer points of contact between participating employers and ESDC during the pilot due to simplified LMIA forms that allow employers to hire more Temporary Foreign Workers for genuine job offers during REP; and
  • a Job Bank designation that indicates their recognized status in order to increase interest from prospective workers.

Study visa holders coming to Canada must go through immigration checks before being issued study permits by the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) Officers.  The Officers have the right to approve/decline students entry to Canada if required documentations are not provided, longer wait periods are therefore expected at the Canadian airports/land border.

The Border Services Officer (BSO) directs arriving students to the location where they are to submit their applications for a study permit.

Students are however advised to carefully review their study permit after collection.

See below full List of Documents Required For New International Students

These documents should all be checked before your ticket is booked as it determines if you are to book or not.

As per CBSA, if you do not have all of the listed 7 documents below, your immigration check at the Canadian airport might be delayed or you could be returned to your home country.

To enter Canada, new international students must have the following:

  • acceptable travel documentation, such as a passport
  • the letter of introduction from the port of entry that the visa office sent you when they approved your study permit, or a valid study permit if you have one.

See below eligibility requirements to enter Canada as an International Student

International Students need to first make sure that they meet the overall eligibility requirements to travel.

To enter Canada as a student, individuals need to:

  • possess a valid study visa or a letter of introduction proving they were approved to study; and
  • prove they are attending a designated learning institution (DLI).

As per CBSA, study visa holders are advised to travel as soon as possible after receiving their visa stamp to avoid the high volume of travellers in late August, early September, and early January.
