IRCC implements New Canadian Citizenship Waivers

The Immigration Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) set up waivers that would simplify the process of being a canadian citizen for eligible permanent resident holders. All three waivers include the citizenship test waiver, waiver on oath and language waiver.

Applicants below 14 years and above 55 years can take a waiver on oath of citizenship, this consideration is based on thier mental capability.

Also waivers have been put on compassionate grounds, this apply to candidates between the ages of 18 and 54 who have signed the citizenship application and need to take the citizenship test to demonstrate their language skills in English or French. Applicants can take a waiver on compassionate grounds if they have genuine reasons which includes a medical or non-medical circumstance (or both) that is in line with IRCC standards. These reasons may include a severe illness that has lingered, a mental disability, physical impairment or even post traumatic experiences from war, torture and similar experiences. Applicants may also be considered if they have a low level of literacy in their mother tongue or first language.

However, IRCC will not give a waiver to applicants with financial reasons or excuses of inadequate time to prepare for the citizenship test.

It is important to note that eligible applicants can apply for more than one of the waivers for citizenship application using the Waiver Request form (CIT 0116).

Only permanent residents of Canada who have lived in Canada for 1,095 days out of the five years following their application, have not been involved in any criminal activity, met with their income tax filing obligations and have an adequate knowledge of English or French language if they are between the ages of 18-54 years will be eligible to become Canadian Citizens.
