Dear future neighbour,

If you’re planning to travel, work, or study in Canada, it’s important to know how long it may take for your application to be processed. Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) updates processing times regularly, and these can vary depending on the type of application and the applicant’s country of residence.

Below, you’ll find the most recent processing time updates for:

  • Visitor Visas

  • Work Permits

  • Study Permits

These estimates provide an overview of how long applications are currently taking to be finalized. Please note that processing times are subject to change and can be affected by the volume of applications, local visa office capacity, and individual circumstances.

Check the tables below for the latest timelines specific to your country.

IRCC processing time for Visitor Visa as at October 1, 2025

A visitor visa allows foreign nationals to travel to Canada for tourism, family visits, or short-term business. It is usually required for citizens of countries that are not visa-exempt.

Dear future neighbour,

Are you a student, a worker, or even a visitor in Canada? Are you working towards obtaining a permanent resident status? If you answered YES to any of these questions, then this article is for YOU.

Whatever you do in any of the above categories, you must ensure that you do not make the mistake of falling out of status in Canada, which means you should be very careful to make sure that your study permit, work permit, or visitor visa does not expire; in addition, it is crucial that you do not engage in any activity that could jeopardize your status, such as failing to obey the conditions of your visa.

Many temporary residents tend to forget that their temporary status is not permanent. In this article, we want to remind you that if you fail to obey the conditions of your visa or disobey Canadian immigration law, it can result in you becoming inadmissible for permanent residence in Canada.

See below list of things that can make you inadmissible for PR in Canada:

1. Overstaying on a Visitor Visa

2. Working beyond the allowed limit on your study permit

3. Getting out of status for any reason and continuing to stay in Canada

Do you need help applying for a PGWP require assistance with securing a visitor visa for Canada, seeking professional aid in submitting a study visa or work permit application, crafting an Expression of Interest, setting up an express entry or provincial nomination profile, preparing your application post receiving an invitation to apply, or simply reviewing your self-prepared application? Dear future neighbour,

As announced by IRCC on the 22nd of January, 2024, all provinces are required to issue Provincial Attestation Letters (PALs) based on the allocation of study permits they receive within the newly implemented cap on study permits for 2024.

All provinces were given until March 31, 2024 to begin issuing the letters to international students. New Brunswick, Saskatchewan, Newfoundland and Labrador have joined British Columbia, Alberta, Manitoba and Quebec on the list of provinces that have carried out this task.

Details on getting a PAL in New Brunswick

IRCC states that New Brunswick has had a PAL process in place since March 18. International students are required to contact their Designated Learning Institution (DLI) to find out how to apply.

After application, the DLI will then request for PAL from the province which would take a duration of two weeks to get a response.

On receipt of the PAL document, students can now submit their final study permit application alongside the completed PAL document.

Details on getting a PAL in Saskatchewan

According to IRCC, the PAL process for Saskatchewan has been in place since March 13, 2024. International students are advised to contact their DLI to get their PAL.

Details on getting a PAL in Newfoundland and Labrador

As of March 19, 2024, Newfoundland and Labrador’s PAL system has been put in place. International students are advised to contact their DLI to apply for their PAL.

Memorial University in St. John’s has the largest number of international students of any DLI in the province. The institution says it will contact admitted students via email to collect any additional information required for the attestation letter process, this will begin with students who intend to start in the May 2024 semester.

Dear future neighbour,

IRCC updated Spousal Open Work Permit (SOWP) today, March 19, 2024.

Spouses or common-law partners whose sponsors are enrolled in a master’s or doctoral degree program in a university or polytechnic in Canada are eligible for SOWP.

Spouses of undergraduate students studying any of the professional degrees listed below at a university in Canada are also eligible for a SOWP:

  • Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS, DMD)
  • Bachelor of Law or Juris Doctor (LLB, JD, BCL)
  • Doctor of Medicine (MD)
  • Doctor of Optometry (OD)
  • Pharmacy (PharmD, BS, BSc, BPharm)
  • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM)
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN, BSN, BNSc)
  • Bachelor of Education (B. Ed.)
  • Bachelor of Engineering (B. Eng., BE, BASc)

Spouses and partners applying for Spousal Open Work Permit must provide the documents below. A document that shows relationship to the student and proof of their partner’s enrollment in a degree-granting program of study.

  • a valid Letter of Acceptance (LOA) from a Designated Learning Institution (DLI)
  • a proof of enrolment letter from their spouse or partner’s DLI
  • transcripts from their spouse or partner’s current program

IRCC states that those who applied for a SOWP before March 19 are still eligible if their partner:

  • Has a valid study permit.
  • Is eligible for a post-graduation work permit(PGWP).
  • Is a full-time student at one of these types of schools:
  • a public post-secondary school, such as a college or university, or CEGEP in Quebec

  • a Canadian private school that can legally award degrees under provincial law (for example, a bachelor’s, master’s or doctoral degree)

These requirements are the same for current SOWP holders who apply to extend their existing permit.

A Spousal Open Work Permit Holder can work for almost any employer in Canada.

Dear future neighbour,

Alberta and Manitoba has started issuing Provincial Attestation Letters (PAL) to Designated Learning Institutions (DLI). The amount of PALs given to each province and the way they intend to distribute them isn’t known for now.

Only approved international universities in Alberta and Manitoba will be sending the PAL document via email to the student. Students can only request for PAL when they have shown a commitment to study in the Designated Learning Institution by at least paying a deposit fee after receiving an offer of acceptance.

Each DLI have specific requirements for admission into their universities, so students are expected to carefully go through the websites of these universities before requesting for PAL.

IRCC has instructed that all provinces should have fallen in line with this programme as at the last day of March, 2024.

February 23, 2024

Hello future neighbour,

Canada made multiple changes in the beginning of the year in a bid to improve the welfare of international students. Some of these changes included an increase in the cost of living which took effect from January 1, 2024, also the requirement of a Provincial Attestation Letter (PAL)  from the province where the student will reside. A cap was also placed on the number of international students received annually thereby reducing the number of temporary residents by limiting the eligibility for Post Graduate Work Permit (PGWP) and Spousal Open Work Permit (SOWP).

These changes have been contested by international students who have complained about the PGWP and SOWP.

Recently, the Immigration Minister, Marc Miller extended the full-time work policy for eligible international students to April, 30, 2024, this is to enable the students sustain their cost of living.

Not all students are eligible to work, only study permit applicants meeting the below criteria are eligible until April 30, 2024:

If study permit application (or extension) was received by IRCC by October 7, 2022

If any of the following apply to you, you may work off campus for more than 20 hours per week between November 15, 2022, and April 30, 2024:

  • You are a full-time student at a DLI with a study permit (or part-time if it’s your last semester of study).
  • Despite the expiration of your study permit, you have kept your status and are enrolled full-time (or part-time if it’s your last semester) in classes at a DLI.

If study permit application (or extension) was received by IRCC between October 8, 2022, and December 7, 2023

If any of the following apply to you, you may work off campus for more than 20 hours per week between January 1, 2024, and April 30, 2024:

  • You are a full-time student at a DLI with a study permit (or part-time if it’s your last semester of study).
  • Despite the expiration of your study permit, you have kept your status and are enrolled full-time (or part-time if it’s your last semester) in classes at a DLI.
  • Although your study permission has been granted, you have not yet entered Canada.

Any individual who has submitted a study permit application or extension to IRCC after December 7, 2023, is ineligible to work more than 20 hours.

IRCC is however considering increasing the off-campus working hours for students to 30 hours weekly while class is in session.

January 23, 2024

On Monday, January 22, 2024, the Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship of Canada announced a cap on the number of international students Canada will be welcoming in the year 2024 and 2025.

According to the announcement, Canada expects a total of 360,000 international students in the year 2024, that is a decrease by 35% in comparison to the intake of 2023. This total however does not affect those coming in for elementary, secondary, masters and doctorate studies.

IRCC intends to distribute a portion of the cap to each province and territory bearing in mind the population of the different provinces. The provinces will in turn divide the number to approved educational institutions within their jurisdiction.

From Monday, January 22, 2024, each study permit application filed with the IRCC will need to include an attestation letter from a province in order to impose the cap. Provinces and territories have up until March 31, 2024 to set up a procedure for providing attestation letters to students.

By the end of the year, 2024, there will be a reevaluation of the two-year temporary measure by IRCC that will determine the number of study permits that will be issued in 2025.

The Canadian government intends to keep working with educational institutions, stakeholders, all provinces and territories in order to create a sustainable and effective system for international students.
